Maya Angelou Critical Of Inscription At MLK Memorial

When Maya Angelou talks about writing, people wisely listen.

So when she recently talked about the writing on the new MLK memorial in Washington DC, people listened but they also questioned whether or not she was right.

The memorial is punctuated with paraphrases of many of Dr. King's memorable quotes. One of them. Reads: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

It is that sentence that Dr. Angelou has taken umbrage at, telling the Washington Post that "...the quote makes King "look like an arrogant twit." She added, "He was anything but that."

Angelou believes taking the original conditional clause off the excerpt changed its texture and context.
